Crater Diving Utah
Equalizing ears after first scuba dive???
Last saturday i went for a dive in a crater in Utah. We (my dad and I) dove to 40-50ft deep and made a safety stop. I equalized fine going down, but when we surfaced and got ready to go down to 15ft to practice buyoncey, i couldnt equalize my left ear! If i did equalize it, i would go through lots of pain. It was very strange. When we ascended to the surface, i made and “eeeeee” sound going up cuz i think it said something in my book.
IM going diving with my dad tomorrow and i really dont want this to happen. What should i do???
Should i take a sudafed BEFORE diving??? Or what??
please help in 12 years old btw
Stay away from the sudafed. It’ll make matters worse in the long run. Sure, it’ll work for a short time, but what happens eventually is what’s called “rebound”. Your stuffiness gets far worse than it was at first and equalizing becomes nearly impossible. What you can use and has absolutely zero rebound, is a saline mist. You can find it in the decongestant section of the drug store. It’s just salt water in a mister.
As for your equalizing issue, if you’re having problems on the descent, stop. Go up a bit. Try to equalize again. Still not working, go up a bit more and give it another go. Still not working? Forget the dive, you’re too stuffed up.
You should be gently equalizing BEFORE you feel any discomfort. Start the second you begin your descent. It’ll help.
