How to Get Started in Freelance Graphic Design

In the United States approximately 25 percent of people who earned money did so as either a part time or full-time freelance designer. As you can see, tgraphic design work is in high demand.

Some people are unsure how to find work in this field. They also may not know what education or experience they need to seek employment in this field as a freelancer.

1) How to Gain Graphic Design Experience

The easiest way to get graphic design experience is simply to dive in. Learn all you can about the industry. Learn standard design software and start creating projects and displaying them on your own website. Try to find jobs within your community, such as through your local church or school.

Another valuable way to gain graphic design experience is to enroll in formal classes or accredited degree programs. You can gain certifications in specific types of design, such as Flash or cartoon animation. Otherwise you can gain more extensive knowledge as you obtain a two-year Associate’s degree or four-year Bachelor’s degree.

Another way to gain design experience is by watching free tutorials. Many of these are sponsored by professors of various online graphics courses. Makers and distributors of different professional software also offer graphic design video tutorials.

2) How to Display Your Design Experience

Usually freelance designers will collect their finished graphic designs to showcase. These designs may be logos, banners, newsletter heads, or web page images. This collection might even include completed video editing files.

All graphics and media projects created by designers are usually presented in an attractively laid out portfolio. This portfolio can be made into a tangible form to be presented to clients face-to-face.

However, it is more common for freelance designers to display their portfolios online for the entire world to see. Prospective clients will then contact designers via e-mail or telephone if they are interested in receiving services from the designer.

3) How to Find Freelance Design Jobs

One of the most common ways a freelancer graphic designer to earn an income is to apply to freelance job bidding sites. Designers can post bids for how much they are willing to accept as pay for a certain job.

Graphic designers may also network and receive jobs by word-of-mouth from former or current clients. Furthermore, freelance graphic designers can find jobs if potential clients contact them via a website submission form.

Freelance graphic designers who make themselves available for many projects receive the most work. For example, a designer who completes drawings and art for greeting cards may also decide to complete projects in the commercial sector of graphic design. This will increase the revenue of this designer.

A variety of jobs indirectly related to the field of design are available. This will also increase a designer’s chance of furthering a design career.

For instance, graphics designers with a design degree may also dabble in publishing, or in layout design. The most experienced publishers or designers may even oversee an entire publication or design project. They usually hold titles such as editors or creative directors.

Companies that look for creative people interested in design-related careers include the following: newspaper publishers, advertising agencies, television stations, greeting card companies, and print shops.

Media departments of larger companies also employ a variety of design services. These departments are located on the premises of large firms in countless fields, such as major law offices, trucking companies, and corporate headquarters.
