Going to cape hatteras… scuba diving?

Congrats on your interest in the sport.
Cape Hatteras is not a very forgiving location for new divers. While the diving is excellent, it is also often deep with serious currents and may make you change your mind about diving if you try it first. I would recommend training with a reputable agency and getting a few quarry or shallow tropical dives under your belt. I would recommend training with IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers) not PADI. IANTD focuses more on the math and mechanics of diving, something that could save your life in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Make sure you just buy the basics before you are certified, as dive gear is a little specific to where you will do most of your diving. Mask, fins, wetsuit and booties along with a snorkel to begin with.
Dive safe and good luck,
