Chiang Mai is famous for large, colorful, extravagant parties. They can last several days and attract crowds overseas and throughout Thailand. Hotels are filled capacity, reduces traffic to a crawl, train tickets to Chiang Mai and sell out weeks in advance. Thousands of people participate in the decoration of the city, placement stage, creating competitions, float parades and lots of fun.

The season kicks off in November with the Loi Krathong festival, an event three days, which has its origin in making offerings to the spirits of just putting water in the river float. The leaves are sewn together to form something floats, filled with flowers, incense and candles. Before placed in the water, people pray and do what you want is supposed to be granted by the water spirits.

Another part of the festival is the release of ball lightning. Big fireworks paint the night sky with colored lighting.
