Diving Supplies
physic help?
1)you take a running leap off a high diving platform. you were running at 2.8 m/s and hit the water 2.6 s later. how high was the platfrom, and how far from the edge of the platform did you hit the water? neglect air resistance.
2) an airplane traveling 1001 m above the ocean at 125 km/h is to drop a box of supplies to shipwrecked victims below.
a- how many seconds before being directly overhead should the box be dropped?
b- what is the horizontal distance between the plane and the victims when the box is dropped?
1. You have to use two different equations for this problem. The first equation will give you how high the platform is.
d = (v)(t) + (1/2)(a)(t²)
d = (0)(2.6) + (1/2)(9.81)(2.6²)
d = 33.16 m
That gives you how high the platfor is.
This equation will give you how far he landed from the platform horizontally.
d = (v)(t)
d = (2.8)(2.6)
d = 7.28m
2.This equation also requires the use of two equations. Before you start the problem you have to convert 125 km/h to 125000 m/s.
This equtaion will give you the time.
d = (Vi)(t) + (1/2)(a)(t²)
1001 = (0)(t) + (1/2)(9.81)(t²)
204.1 = t²
14.29sec = t
That equation gave you the time, now we need to use that to solve for the distance.
d = (V)(t)
d = (125000)(14.29)
d = 1786250 m
So the plane was 1786250 meters to the side of the landing site when the box was dropped.
