Good places to go backpacking?

Me and a friend, both 22 year old females, are wanting to go somewhere to backpack next mid-april to may. Our plan was originally South Africa but it looks like autumn there (april-may) can get cold. SA appealed to us because of the more extreme things to do (bungee jump, kloofing, absailing, cage shark diving, scuba diving etc…) Most of those would not be great during the autumn/winter seasons. My question is if anyone knows of any other places that may offer the same type of experience (we are not keen on the European site seeing backpacking thing). I’ve been to Costa Rica so I would not go there for this trip, and i’m not sure i’d like to go to Thailand. Any recommendations for somewhere else moderately warm during april-june?

Wonderland Trail at Mount Rainier was awesome. Glacier National Park was great as well.
