Mine Diving

If you have never gone to Pozos, Guanajuato, and live or visit San Miguel de Allende Mx, then you definitely want to take a trip to Mineral Wells Mexico. Recently I made a trip to Pozos, Guanajuato, a small day trip to one hour from San Miguel de Allende, Mx. I never thought much of Mineral de Pozos, since its so small dot on the map, but it is actually a very interesting little town in Mexico.
While on our trip we learned that very few visitors know. We learned that Wells, Guanajuato was once a rich mining town and had a population of over 50,000 people in the 1700A and 1800A's. It was founded mainly by foreigners, people Italy, France and Spain. However, when the mines were exhausted, the city was literally abandoned at the 1920th's. So now these great limestone buildings stand in the comfort and beauty, like beacons calling to something greater. Most have no roof but the stone is on course and melting furnaces standing as were a once built.
These ruins of the elegant buildings, forts and state are truly beautiful, something that comes from movies, but are even more so when begins to talk with the locals in the area. When I took the time to talk with local people, have some really interesting stories to add to the relics. Apparently, the first university in Mexico in Pozos, Guanajuato. It was a school for the gold and silver smiths, based on the 1700A's. The building is now in ruins, but is a magnificent example of architecture of the time, and really great. It's a huge building that stands in the middle of nowhere, among the cacti and shrubs.
On our tour we pass through the walled garden hotel, had lunch outside cafà ©, and then went to the park near the cathedral and began talking to two residents were 103 and 105 years respectively (brother and sister), possibly the oldest citizens in Pozos Guanajuato.
We were told some wonderful stories, of how the bell of the cathedral was once made of pure gold and over three hundred years, the bell tolls, with a beautiful golden bell. But just recently in early 2000 government officials took the bell down for maintenance and sent to Mexico from the city, from which he never returned. He was replaced by an iron bell, and the gold disappeared. Some say it's in the ex-Presidents private rancid (typical Mexican government).
There are many other small communities within Pozos, Guanajuato, where there are other mines. In one such community where he spoke with another gentleman, now caretaker. This elderly gentleman was about 80 years, and I said was still one of the last workers in mines. As a child, who had brought the stones from the mine by wheelbarrow. He said he was about eight at the time. He told us that the restored hacienda that sat on the property had belonged to Porfirio Díaz (Mexican revolutionary very important) who used estate as a place to house its prisoners of war, and he did the work of inmates in the gold mines. It was a perfect way to finance a revolution.
Today the farm is legally disputed. The original owner died without leaving a will, or descendants, so that the property was owned by another local Under the law squatters, without any legal right which says it owns now. Of course this happened suddenly, nephews and nieces were presented for the original legal owner and now the property is legally disputed. Who knows if any of this is true. It may be just local gossip, and fun to listen to these legends.
What is known is that Guanajauto Wells has become a popular place for foreigners. This is because the property can be purchased cheaply. Wells is becoming popular, because it is a quaint, quiet and authentic village of ancient Mexico, which has changed very little over the centuries. The city has two beautiful hotels, a couple of restaurants, and nearly 50 foreign artists making their home. It really is a picturesque place to visit, just make sure you bring walking shoes, because you want it, you can download one of the mines. Be careful though, when we went down the lights went out for about 10 minutes. We had to stay exactly were we were therefore time.
