Scuba Diving November

Do you think i will b able to scuba dive if i have had a ravitch operation?

I had Pectus Excavatum…its like a deep in the chest…so in other words i had a chest operation on 17th november 2008….the main fact is do you think i will be able to go scuba diving or do you think it would be a big risk?

Pectus Excavatum has been associated with decreased lung capacity and the inability of the heart to function properly during strenuous exercise. From what I have heard, cardiac function is improved after the surgery however, lung capacity stays the same. Being that the surgery was not directly related to pulmonary function and function more than likely has improved, I would think diving would be fine. The concern lies in the bodys ability to effectively eliminate inert gas accumulated at depth. Your heart is the pump and your lungs are the gas exchanger, they both have to work together.I would recommend having a pulmonary function test and a very thorough physical with your doc being aware of your intentions.
Hope this help,
