Sydney Diving

I’m from the USA. I’m going to travel from Adelaide to Mackay, over 1 month Sept 2009. What do I need to know?

I’ll probably rent a car (pricey I know, but I’m a photographer, need a little freedom to explore) so I’ll need to know the petrol prices and which car would be best to rent for petrol mileage. I plan on starting in Adelaide and will head along the coastline (where possible) up through Sydney and Brisbane and then on to Mackay where I want to do some diving in the GB Reef. I plan on doing this between Sept 20ish to October 20ish, maybe four/five weeks.

Any advice will be helpful!

Thanks!

Yep definitely rental is a problem as you will be slugged hard in relocation fees. Try buying wicked campers for a different way to travel. Another option is buying a van on http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/ and with the current exchange rate you are looking pretty good.

Over a month to travel so the distance isn’t a problem and there is so much to see. Don’t do the inland route as you will miss the Great Ocean road and the twelve apostles. (See link).

You do know that Mackay is at the very bottom of the Great Barrier Reef meaning that this isn’t the best place to see the reef proper. You would be better off going up to Airlie beach where a lot of the boats go from and the whole area is set up for the tourist to see the reef. If you have time you can even go higher up the coast but Airlie is a good kick off point.

If you want to save money on camping then try and buy a copy of the Camps 4 book. This resource gives you all the free or low priced campsites available on your trip. What you save on caravan parks alone pays for the book ten times over and you see so much more.

Have a ball and take your time going through our beautiful country.
