Teaching Diving Swimming
… I can’t swim and swimming starts tomorrow!?
I’m already a freshman at my high school, and I can’t swim! For some reason, I can hold my breath underwater, and I can swim underwater just fine.. But here are things I don’t know how to do:
1. I’m scared to try to touch the bottom of the “deep end”..
2. Swim above water.
3. Dive.
4. Just about anything in the deep end scares me.. I don’t even try to swim there!
Are there any sites or people that can teach me how to swim (not physically, just explaining some common ways to swim), that take into account my.. Err.. Limitations?
Also – I’m kind of scared that the other kids will laugh at me, since they all know how to swim. Before we do anything at our school, we get tested to see how good we are – and I am certainly going to be put in like level 1.. Any cures?
Thanks!
I was a sophomore in high school before I learned how to swim, and I taught myself! Don’t worry, swimming is easy. (There’s no such thing as someone who “can’t” swim!–only people who don’t know how to swim!)
First of all, get over your fear of water. Don’t worry — you won’t sink, no matter what you do. The human body is lighter than water. Even if you relax and do absolutely nothing, you will float!
Try this: get in the water, wade out to about chest-level, then relax and lay over backward, arching your back way back. Raise your feet off the bottom of the pool. There you are, floating on your back! Lean your head back to keep your nose and mouth out of the water so you can breathe, and relax in between breaths. That’s all there is to it; you’re now floating. Swimming is only a couple of simple steps away, and your swim instructors can show you exactly what to do. Have fun — swimming is one of the best overall exercises you can do, and , for me , one of the most enjoyable!
